Corrections

The Corrections Division is responsible for managing all functions related to prisoners and jail operations. Prisoner management primarily includes care, custody, and control, intake and release, housing, and transportation of prisoners. In addition to these responsibilities, the department provides a wide array of quality services including medical, mental health, food, counseling, recreation, religious, and education.

While the Corrections Division is the least visible aspect of Sheriff’s Office operations, it is the largest part of the Office employing over 40 sworn and civilian staff.

Jail Information

The original jail was built in 1950 and housed 21 inmates. In 1986, an expansion was done and increased the number of beds to 82. In October of 2006 another addition was added. This expansion was done and opened in May of 2009. The jail how has 160 beds.

 

Visitation/Communication of Inmates:

The Geary County Detention Center uses state of the art video visitation equipment use while in custody. This accomplishes several things within the jail, such as high quality monitoring and recording of all visitation sessions and minimal staff interaction to conduct the sessions. It also provides inmates and their families a quality system to conduct their visits as well as open scheduling for the inmate’s family. Please call for visitation times – (785)-762-6583

There are no phone calls allowed to come into the jail facility for the inmates. The inmates are allowed to purchase calling cards while in custody which allow them phone access.

Inmates can receive individual photographs, but no packages pictures or Polaroid photos. Inmates cannot receive any type of packages. Letters with no return address will not be given to the inmate.
